What year are you in? 你現在幾年級?
在大學裡，年紀大的學生不一定是學長/學姐，因為他們可能入學比較晚。如果想知道別人是讀幾年級，可以問：What year are you in?（你是幾年級的？）在一般四年制的大學裡，每年級都有特別的名稱：一年級是Freshman Year、二年級是Sophomore Year、三年級是Junior Year、四年級是Senior Year。如果是讀大學一年級，可以這樣自我介紹：I'm in my freshman year.或者I'm a freshman.（我是個新鮮人）。

阿德里恩：我們是唸同一間學校的，不是嗎？
Marcus：We sure do.
馬卡斯：我們肯定是。
Adrian：I haven't seen you in any of my classes. What year are you in?

和初相識的大學生交談，一般都會問：What year are you in?（你是幾年級的？）
假如你是大學生(undergraduate)，可以說I'm a freshman / sophomore / junior / senior（我是一 / 二 / 三 / 四年級學生）、I'm a first-year / second-year student（我是一 / 二年級學生）、I'm in my junior / third year（我唸三年級）等。
假如你是研究所學生，則可以說I'm a graduate student / postgraduate student / research student。Graduate student是美式說法，postgraduate student則是英式。Post有「之後」含義，假如「戰後」是postwar，「延後」是postpone等。Postgraduate即「大學畢業之後」。
研究生又可分碩士班和博士班。要講清楚，英文可以說：I'm a doctoral student（我是博士班學生）、I'm a master's degree student / I'm a master's student（我是碩士班學生）、I'm a PhD / an MPhil student（我是博士 / 碩士班學生）等等。PhD, MPhil即doctor of philosophy和master of philosophy。
留意 a PhD student不一定是唸哲學的。英文philosophy一字，由希臘文philo（愛）、sophy（技巧、智慧）兩字合成；所以，任何一門學問的原理，都可稱為philosophy，例如the philosophy of economics / science是「經濟學 / 科學原理」。一個「哲學博士」班學生，所習的可能是電腦科學、音樂或經濟。英文可以這樣說：I'm a PhD student in computer science / music / economics，用介系詞 (preposition) in帶出所讀學科。
